What the EA needs from the machine

Kestrel needs a connected terminal whenever its own signal can arrive. A terminal that is offline at that moment does not act late; it does not act at all, and the basket it would have opened or closed never exists.

In the EURUSD Patient simulation (2010–2025, Dukascopy data) the strategy held open exposure through almost the entire period, so there is barely a moment when being offline is harmless. Kestrel’s own two demo accounts have run on a VPS since September 2026, for the same reason.

Latency is to your broker

The number worth looking at is the round trip between the VPS and your broker’s trade server, not between the VPS and your home. A data centre near the broker beats a faster machine on another continent.

Kestrel is not a scalper, so microseconds buy nothing. What matters is that the connection is there every time, not that it is quick.

Memory, cores and uptime

Size the plan by terminals, not by robots: one terminal can carry several charts, and a K3 account runs two, one per variant.

• Memory is usually the binding constraint, because each terminal keeps its charts and history in RAM.
• CPU rarely is. A robot waiting for its signal is idle almost all the time.
• Uptime and reboots matter most. Ask what happens during host maintenance and whether the terminal restarts by itself afterwards.

A cheap forex VPS is fine if its uptime holds; a pricey one that reboots under you is not.

How to check a provider before you pay

• Ask which data centre the trading plan runs in and which brokers are hosted near it.
• Confirm the plan is a Windows machine you control, not a managed panel where you cannot install your own expert advisor.
• Check the refund window and whether you can cancel monthly.
• Run one terminal for a week before moving the rest.

After the terminal was offline

A reconnection is not a problem in itself: the expert advisor refills its price history before deciding again, so it never acts on a half-empty chart. What it cannot recover is the time that has already passed.
